Kalpana Patowary busy recording the first rare WORLD MUSIC album on The Shakespeare of Bhojpuri literature.- Bhikari Thakur releasing from EMI/Virgin Records.

We’re the World; we’re the Music!

Not many artists can take credit for being change-makers.But Kalpana had courage, the madness and the belief in herself to look beyond traditions and carve a unique niche for herself. In an era where pop and rock music rules, Kalpana tries to relive the country’s long-forgotten treasure of Bhikari Thakurs Bhojpuri folk music. This Assamese girl is the darling of the North Indian belt and has carved herself a special niche in the Bhojpuri music world credited with reviving and promoting the Bhojpuri music industry all over the world and bringing back traditional forms of music to the International stage. Indian folk music particularly of Northern India & North East has been showcased and revived by Kalpana in a big way. As Kalpana says,I don’t want my folk music to be trapped in our villages. Yes it’s safe there in its original form, but of no use unless we make the world hear our very soulful and meditative music. To make it global I am trying to blend the folk music of my homeland with world music and other genres. This passion for traditional music, the burning sense of rhythm and grooves made singer Kalpana worked in an album together with world class India’s virtuoso percussionist and bandleader Trilok Gurtu, one of the most dynamic and prolific musicians on a new project MASSICAL released from BIRD JAM label Germany and collaborated with international unique musicians like Carlo Cantini, Jan Garbarek, Phil Drummy, Roland Cabezas, Stefano Dall’Ora. Says Kalpana, there is no recorded songs on Bhikari Thakur till date and this will be the first rare one releasing from EMI/Virgin Records. I am approaching the core people who have the pristine treasure of music, wherever they are. Besides focusing on unsung songs or who have a repertoire that is on the verge of extinction. I have also recorded some songs unheard. Recording the album is already having an impact. I am getting calls from all over. This album will give a chance to uncover the unique flavor of Bhikari Thakur and listen to the unadulterated voice of Kalpana piercing right through to your soul. These songs will literally move you.  The tunes create village spaces. Kalpana has paid tribute to Bhikari Thakur recently in a Bhojpuri music reality show Sur Sangram 2 on Mahua Tv. She gave a power packed performance singing the Bhikari Thakur parichay. Says Kalpana, how inspired I am by Bhikari Thakur's life, how the legend has shaped the future of Bhojpuri music.
I want to keep the legend alive. Is folk songs of Bhikari Thakur finding it hard to survive? She asserts,"Lok sangeet na ghat-ta hai, na badhta hai, barabar chalta hai."Bhikari Thakur songs are rich in imagery and heavy in Bhojpuri dialect. Truly "studios kill the soul of music." but we are trying to keep it in its raw form. What we require is some technical input, and the ability to afford to keep the folk songs intact, and thereafter portray them with better frames. This album will have drama of rhythms and percussions. Says Kalpana…I felt a greater emotional connection with more acoustic-oriented artists, particularly Bhikari Thakur. I’m sure the world will listen to our folk songs and appreciate its richness.Kalpana brings the original vibrancy and richness of the Bhikari Thakur folk forms to the World wide so that people from the world over can experience the originality and richness of Bhojpuri music. The songs gives listeners a of space and time of that era. BT songs treat life with an experienced simplicity. Kalpana belives…this is an endeavour with a cause. “In an era of pop and rock, we are losing the basic foundation of our culture ie folk”…clarifies Kalpana who conceptualized this idea. Kalpana’s vocal in this album showcase the traditional flavor of Bhikari Thakur interwoven with her phenomenal sense of tone, her voice throwing command and sparkle of variety of styles is commendable. This new album on Bhikari Thakur will be a true benchmark in the annals of Bhojpuri Music Industry and will set new standards for Bhojpuri music. This album has something that’s not easily done; introducing a new genre of music to the people and having them accept it without hesitation. She is also planning to do a series of albums on Bhikari Thakur in the future and keep the legend alive within her, in her own little way. With this album, singer Kalpana will generate a mass interest on Bhojpuri music in a genre like WORLD MUSIC.She specifies, "I am not just trying to preserve his folk forms, but trying to sustaining the legendary artist Bhikari Thakur."

Kalpana Patowary in her own voice.

ON HOW SHE LEARNS A SONG

I first write the lyrics in hindi, in devnagri - even if the words are in urdu or in any other language.
The music director sings the song to me so I hear the tune and I read the words.
I make notes on my page of the lyrics…..
Then I memorise the tune and sing it…..if you memorise a song, you internalize it.

ON LEARNING THE LESSIONS RIGHT

Composer Amar Haldipuri…taught me when to inhale and exhale.
Another thing my guruji USTAD GULAM MUSTAFA KHAN told me - if I m stressing a particular note - how much to fade in and fade out of the note.
ANAND RAJ ANAND advised me to make sure I sing every word clearly.
And if a word happens to fall on a beat - it must be emphasized a little, in order to lift the song.

Kalpana busy recording her latest WORLD MUSIC album on Bhikari Thakur - The Shakespeare of Bhojpuri literature.

Singer Kalpana……They insulted me purely on the basis of their own opinion and not on facts.

Controversy was there right from the beginning –Gawanawa leija Rajaji…. One song which became an antheme –Ego chumma lela rajaji. Some said its was mere an expression of a loving wife, other said its not our culture, our bahu –beti will not express their feelings in such a bold way. While the whole nation was enjoying, some political manipulative industry persons couldn’t resist Kalpana as she was an outsider geographically. Yes, she is neither from UP or Bihar. Being from Assam how can she become sooo popular-this thought itself was a threat for many and their hatred was at its peak as we witnessed her effigy burning publically in BALLIA, UP. They insulted her purely on the basis of their own opinion and not on facts.

But nothing could stop her………as not many artists can take credit for being change-makers. You have to have courage and the belief in oneself to look beyond traditions and carve a unique niche for yourself.

Today BHOJPURI has given Kalpana so much that she can’t think of how to compensate back.Says Kalpana…..with god’s grace it’s been a very beautiful journey. Whenever people comes to know about me being from Assam they get surprised and always express-----oh Assam,Dr Bhupen Hazarika------Ganga Bahti ho kyon….and after him here comes Kalpana. I feel so very special because from my childhood days Dr Bhupen Hazarika has been my idol. And if my respected listeners thinks and put up my name just beside my childhood idol Dr Bhupen Hazarika,it itself carries so much of responsibility for me.

Says,Kalpana,I met so many singers all over the country who wants to become & sing like me. Yes they follow me as I am their idol…they sing and try to imitate me & my songs (devotional bhajans like devi geet, chhath geet, holi songs and even the filmi hot item numbers).I feel so very special but with that comes a very strong feel of responsibility to introduce them with real BHOJPURI music, about their musical roots, and to stand in this reigning global music scenario with their real identity.

But today, if we talk about Bhojpuri music, first we should know about Bhojpur, where it is …?

Three districts ARA, CHHAPRA from BIHAR and BALIA from U.P makes todays BHOJPUR and the boli or language spoken in Bhojpur is actually Bhojpuri. Its a different matter that now even avadhi, banarsi, maghai, angika and even to some extent maithli is also included as a part of Bhojpuri culture as people know it nationally.

But the core of Bhopuri boli is actually limited to only Ara, Chhapra and Balia.

Secondly, we have to know the authenticity of Bhojpuri music in its original and raw form to present to the world and to all those budding singers/artists.

The answer is off course- BHIKHARI THAKUR.

But then, who is he and where is he now?

Among the masses of Bihar and other Bhojpuri-speaking areas, he needs no introduction. But the so-called mainstream ‘culture’, like always, has conspired to keep mum about his contribution, actively avoiding, even mentioning his name and have fullstoped him with giving the title of THE SHAKESPERE OF BHOJPURI LITERATURE.

Hence, there are no serious documented accounts of his works till now. There are organizations who are also trying to revive HIM. But practically, none could bring out THE ARTISTE from the legend BHIKHARI THAKUR. Now here, I don’t want to take the credit, but yes I think it’s my turn to give something I can as an artiste.

I had to research a lot, now it’s been 3 year since. I had visited to many remote areas in Bihar to gather some knowledge about him. Then one fine day in a remote village called Bakhorapur in Ara,Bihar,I was introduced with a very sparkling moment of my life. I went for a cultural show.

Before my performance one artiste came and performed. His performance was so rustic, his voice, oh my god-I gulped.

He was a very aged person, may be 100 years old, known as a nartak in the original Bhikhari Thakur mandali.

I bowed and took ashirvaad from him and a desire took birth to sing Bhikhari in its original form.

Kalpana says-Bihar is not explored musically. Its always the U.P side the nation knows as Bhojpuri. Even in Bollywood it’s always the U.P folk.

I have heard many artiste singing Bidesia and in films also. It was good but somehow for me it was a polished version.

This old man had a completely different presentation.

Then I came back home to Mumbai, again got busy in professional commitments.

But that desire was still living inside me.

I tried to find BHIKHARI THAKUR on internet, failed, went to Patna searching books about him but in vain.

Then after a year, one local Patna artiste came with the ‘Bhikhari rachnawali’ by rashtrabhasha parishad,Bihar.

I was so happy and started studying the book about the inner facts of the whole social, political and spiritual elements of the Bhikhari time zone. But again one challenge raised, where to get the original thekas(rhythm)and original compositions as sung the way Bhikhari Thakur used to. A year later I went to Bakhorapur, met that rustic nartak and request him to sing for me.

He understood my intentions, agreed and the local villagers helped me to shoot and record the rustic nartak.

This desire to keep the legend alive and to introduce to the world the real Bhojpuri music, Bhikhari Thakur became my PASSION.This passion I am carrying is blissful and…I AM ENLIGHTENED………

This is a rare audio of Bhikhari Thakur singing a song from "Bidesia"

Singer Kalpana is known and loved for her beautiful, earthy voice, that has this hard-to-miss, rustic quality about it.This “Tera Ishk Se Meetha” film Aakrosh and“Aila Re Aila Mast Chamaila” film Khatta Meetha singer Kalpana has certainly struck the right chord with her audience. She has good reason to be cheering, as she has been nominatedbyZEE TALKIES for Maharashtracha Favourite Kaun- Peoples Choice Award- 2010 for most popular Marathi singer for song "Sarkar Aahoo Sarkar" for film Gallit Gondhal Dillit Mujra.

This mega event will be held on the 29th October 2010 at Grand Hayatt, Santacruse in Mumbai and will be telecasted live by Zee Talkies."I am very excited and am confident but at the same time, I also am a little scared, wondering how my song will be received," she says, humility personified. In spite of her mother tongue being Assamese, Kalpana easily adapted different languages. She has already sung in around 9000 songs for 22 languages. Dedicated and devoted are the adjectives that come to mind when we talk about Kalpana and her music. The unmistakable divinity in the way she renders each of her songs is what makes them work. She believes, "You need to absorb and own a song. When you sing, you should become the song itself." For Kalpana, our legendary Asha Bhosle is the incarnation of versatility and she says, "I have never imitated Ashaji’s voice but I have learned her style, the way she enjoys her notes…..she is versatile…she is a complete singer. This Assamese girl is the darling of the North Indian belt and has been christened the uncrowned BHOJPURI QUEEN. She has been credited with reviving and promoting the Bhojpuri music industry all over the world. Kalpana feels that appreciation from her audience is like a message that she is on the right path. Says Kalpana, Mumbai is where everything happens. It's the one place where you can make a mark, where you can make a difference. I think Mumbai has started to accept me.

"I feel inspired by people applauding me — that energy transmits into me and it helps me take a step further into my inner journey as a human being. It helps me become more settled and contend. I feel that I am following my heart, that my horizon is getting bigger," she says. So, is music everything to this singer? "Yes it is but I would like heal people though my music. I have already started my journey towards it. Sufism moves me." she says.

Aakrosh---“Tera Ishk Se Meetha” registers Kalpana’s voice in Bollywood.

Aakrosh---“Tera Ishk Se Meetha” registers Kalpana’s voice in Bollywood.

A young talented singer Kalpana has already captured the Indian audiences with the sensational song “tera ishk se meetha” from Priyadarshan’s film Aakrosh.

After energetic duet of “Aila Re Aila Mast Chamaila” with Diler Mahendi for Akshay Kumar’s film Khatta Meetha...singer Kalpana has hit the high notes again.

This time with the song “Tera Ishk Se Meetha” from Priyadarshan’s film Aakrosh, Kalpana has extended herself from her image to provide vibrant and energetic song in the film that has got the entire nation ecstatic. This masala number is sung with Sameera Reddy’s thumkas. Kalpana has sang the song in an attitude.

“Tera Ishk Se Meetha” has registered Kalpana’s voice in Bollywood and is currently the number one song on radio stations across the country.

Clearly, Kalpana has made it big in Bollywood with the magic of her voice.
She credits composer Pritam for giving her one of the best songs.
“Tera Ishk Se Meetha” is the song which puts loads of life into Aakrosh, that has Ajay Devgn, Akshaye Khanna , Bipasha Basu, Sameera Reddy and Paresh Rawal in the lead, is a wake-up call for the Indian audience based on the Honor Killings.

Could we imagine that song without her voice? Perhaps no, because the way she sang. It is definitely a huge hit song of 2010 against Munni Badnam from film Dabbang that music enthusiasts are enjoying.

Says Kalpana, music director Pritam called me and narrated the songs situation, but didn't mention anything about the production house or who it will be pictured on. It all came as a surprise to me.

In fact, music director Pritam made me sing various songs in films like Shah Rukh Khan’s –Billu Barber (Billu Bhayankar), Akshay Kumars –De Dana Dan (Hotty Naughty), Akshay Kumars-Khatta Meetha (Aila Re Aila Mast Chamaila).

Kalpana's voice is apt for a song of this genre which has a folk and rustic touch.

This Assamese girl is the darling of the North Indian belt and has been christened the uncrowned BHOJPURI QUEEN. Says Kalpana, “Tera Ishk Se Meetha” is a good composition…worth listening.
