Singer Kalpana is leaving no stones unturned to let her presence felt in bollywood. She is going to be a part of NDTV IMAGINE’s new musical reality show JUNOON…..Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka ! produced by Gajendra Singh.

There will be a battle between three music genres 

FOLK - mentor is Illa Arun, SUFI - mentor is Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and FILMI - mentor is Anand Raj Anand.

Kalpana will represent the folk team “Maati Ke Laal” presenting folk songs from UP,Bihar,Assam & Bengal.

The decision on the genre will be based on 100 per cent audience votes.

This singer Kalpana is making it big in the small screen. She is one of the strong contender of NDTV IMAGINE’s new musical reality show JUNOON…..Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka ! Kalpana is represent the folk team “Maati Ke Laal”, presenting folk songs from UP/Bihar/ Assam .

The show started with a very grand opening by dashing ever charming talented actor Hritik Roshan. Hritik’s presence in the show revealed the glamour of the show. The show is hosted by none other than the legend of silver screen Annu Kapoor. His presence shows the deftness of the show.

Illa Arun represented Kalpana from folk group as Triveni of river Bhramaputra and Ganga as she has taken the responsibility of three states-UP, Bihar & Assam. Kalpana’s performance of bihu of Assam was the greatest hit. She was asked by Illa Arun to sing Bhupen Hazarika’s hit song Manuhe Manuhor Babe and got great applaud from the judges and the audience.

Says Kalpana, I am from northeast, ASSAM . Northeast is a reservoir of talent but it hurts when people consider the region different from India . She feels that north-eastern India is a reservoir of talent but it has not been given due recognition because the region suffers from a sense of geographical and social alienation. She is 'hurt' that many people do not consider the northeast as a part of India . For example, in the television music talent hunt reality shows contestants from our region do well. And the nation must realise that they (participants) reach there because of their talent, not favouritism. I want the rest of the country to cherish it, but respect for the region is lacking,' KALPANA told. Kalpana holds the local residents equally responsible. 'Talents from the region are not being recognised. To a certain extent, we (northeast residents) are also responsible for it because we don't remind them about our potential.

But without any support she made it big in Mumbai film industry. She has truly confirmed that language has no barrier. It would be injustice to put a tag (Bhojpuri Singer) on Kalpana. If we correctly analyze she can really sing in different languages.

Says Kalpana,I had no support or godfather in Mumbai .But thanks to the people of UP & BIHAR who gave me full support and made Kalpana a big name in Bhojpuri music industry. She says, today with this show JUNOON people are getting to know the richness of Bhojpuri music. I wish if Laluji extend his best wishes & moral support to promote Bhojpuri as he is the only international super star.

Kalpana’s get up, her performance, her confidence and above all her signing in the show is mind-blowing. She is the most versatile singer. What a tremendous power & performance Kalpana has. Kalpana, you are a very big bridge in between Assam & Bhojpuri. You are the voice of 16 lakh Bhojpuri speaking people. I some times suspect that how u pronounces such good Bhojpuri language. hi last night i saw recording of 4 episodes of LUX JUNOON,when i joined it-bhu as a student i don't like to listen bhojpoori songs,many student who belong to east up n bihar used to listen, i saw your and other singers video songs, all are cheap and double meaning work. i think that why a big mass of sophisticated public don't like to listen folk. BUT when i saw your aasmi performance in junoon, i came to know that how talented you are and there must be a hard work behind your success and what a classy singer you are. now i m your big fan, there is a suggestion being a ground level man that try to improve the standard of songs, now days so many people thought that bhojpori songs have a cheap market and at a some extent it's true also so many people hate them.hope singer like you,will increase the height of bhojpuri songs and other folks .... finally wish you all the best ... mati ki khusboo aap hi logo se bhikhregi.. bas mati ko mati rakhna kichad mat karna ... and thanx to Mr. gajendra ji for junoon.

Says Kalpana,the film industry works on one principle:the hit principle.
One big hit and the artist is flooded with offers. So I don’t have that one big hit like a Kajra Re or a Beedi to back me up which has happened with many of my contemporaries like Kunal Ganjawala,Shrea Goshal,Sunidhi Chauhan,Zubeen Garg. Also, I am an established singer in Bhojpuri Industry. But people assume that I am from Bihar and stay in BIHAR. In fact I stay very much in Mumbai. Producers and directors usually debate about the feasibility whether Bhojpuri singer Kalpana can sing Hindi songs when the fact is that I am singing in more than 20 languages. In fact I started my singing career with the English remix song MY HEART IS BEATING from TIMES MUSIC.I sang a lot of English songs for TIMES MUSIC. I have sung one remix song for TIMES MUSIC which has music by DJ KANNA from Hydrabad. He is the winner from Hydrabad in the famous international competition WAR OF THE DJ’s organized by TIMES MUSIC. This song has fusion of western and Bhojpuri folk.Now we will get to listen Bhojpuri folk in disco‘s.I had done jingles for India Today, LIC,Digboi Refinery.My first hindi film before I came to Bhojpuri industry was STUMPED of Ravina Tendon with music by Pritam,Jackie Shroff’s & Ravina Tendon’s Sandhya with music by Anand Raj Anand.

DOESN’T UNCHA LAMBA KAD FROM FILM “WELCOME” QUALIFY AS A HIT?

The song UNCHA LAMBA KAD was a duet with ANAND RAJ ANAND.It did build up a curiosity of “who this new girl Anand Raj Anand has introduced.”The song was a major hit.I was appreciated for the song.It got me some recognition but it didn’t do much in terms of getting me more work.The songs that really got me recognition was HAADSA featuring Rakhi Sawant released from UNIVERSAL MUSIC,PYAR ZINDAGI HAI the Lounge remix BY DJ SUKETU released from TIMES MUSIC ,REMIX song DARIYA KINERE MERA BANGLA HOGA featuring Sweta Salve realesed from CRESCENDO MUSIC.These songs were a hit in the metros of the country.It also got me critical acclaim-not many new singers would get this kind of an opportunity.

DESPITE THE LACK OF THE SUPER-HIT SONG TAG,YOU HAVE STARTED WORKING WITH THE BEST IN THE INDUSTRY.HOW IT FEELS…

Fortunately,I have worked with Anand Raj Anand,Pritam,Monty Sharma,Sameer Tendon.I am looking forward to work with A.R.Rahman,Vishal Bharadwaj,Vishal Shekhar and Shankar Ehsaan Loy because I simply love their music.

THERE HAVE BEEN ASSUMPTIONS THAT SINCE KALPANA’S MAKING LOADS OF MONEY RECORDING FOR BHOJPURI FILMS,SHE IS NOT KEEN FOR HINDI FILMS.IS THAT TRUE.

Oh my god! Who said this? Not true! I admit that my PR skills are a little poor.My Bhojpuri film songs are going on.But if given a choice I would much rather record for hindi films because that’s where the creative energy will flow. Bhojpuri songs are a great fun too: I have sung great songs.In fact most of them are like bhojpuri songs.I think my time will come.I have never pushed for work because I believe that music directors have adiscerning ear and they will notice my work and call me.But maybe I need to get in touch with everyone to remind them…..about me(smiles)

ALSO RECORDING FOR BHOJPURI SONGS MUST HAVE BEEN A GREAT TRAINING GROUND FOR YOU?

I guess it did help. Even at the risk of sounding pompous I would say that if you hear any of my albums or film songs, none of them sound amateurish,in terms of my singing. Its because I came from the advertising background where in thirty seconds I had to execute songs like I would need to for a five-minute film song.And I got to sing a range of songs which had moods of lullaby,devotional,romantic,peppy,comedy songs.
In earlier times an unconventional voice was recerved for a gypsi or a vamp.But today,even a heroin sings with a thick voice.Today the heroin is no longer a passive character.Also the music has changed,it is more upfront.So with many things changing,the requirement of a voice has also undergone a change,so now you have Richa Sharma,Sunidhi Chauhan and Jaspinder Narula who are voices that are used as lead singers.I think it is nice to have such a range of voices.


WHAT’S AHEAD FOR THE FUTURE ?

I am doing a reality show for NDTV IMAGIN.
I am pretty excited with my songs in Sunny Deol & Bobby Deol’s film CHAMPU with music by Monty Sharma.I have recorded two songs for the film. These songs might indicate that I am versatile in my singing.Dukh Ke Badal is a folky track. I have sung on a very high scale.Thanks to Montiji direction.Really a great music director.The other song is totally a western number.I have sung a duet song with Kavita Krishnamurti for TAJ MAHAL TOURISM with lyrics of Sudhakar Sharma and music by Amar Haldipuri.I have sung an album for Pakistani singer NOOR JAHAN with music rearranged by Amar Haldipuri. This album is a tribute to the legendary Pakistani singer Noor Jahan.I have recently playbacked classical and western back vocals for an album of International acclaimed musician Trilok Gurtu’s musical concert.I have also recorded an awakening song with all the top singers of the industry. The song is dedicated to the today’s burning issue of Global Warming with music director deo Sandarbh.

I have had very good releases in the recent past, so I am hoping for the best. And in retrospect I would say that I am not looking for recording all the songs in the world although I am singing in 20 languages. The album does not fall in any particular genre as it has a blend of earthy and heavenly love.”The lyrics of the album are written by Sandeep Nath who has given hits in films like PAGE 3, CORPORATE, SAWARIA and many more. This album will show case the best of Kalpana. Kalpana hails from Assam and made her Bollywood debut as a playback singer with films likeAAKROSH, KHATTA MEETHA,WELCOME,BILLU BARBER,DE DANA DAN,SANDHYA –THE FEAR WITHIN, 88 ANTOP HILL, STUMPED to name a few. Her musical journey began at the age of 5 when she was learning from her father. I am launching my first International music album in order to reach out to the maximum music lovers around the globe.

Kalpanas international project delayed.

The latest whispers in the music buff is that in the wake of todays music scenario Kalpana’s Music Box Productions international music video album has got delayed a lot.When contacted, Kalpana categorically said, “yes the album has got delayed a lot.” But what is sure is that I feels that a lot more work needs to be done on the video.

The arrival and the subsequent success of VFX & CGI has changed equations in the industry.”

VFX and more specifically CGI is used in a lot of modern animation because it is almost always cheaper and faster than creating thousands of individual hand-drawn images.

When asked, she said the music video was taking time since she wanted to raise it to the highest standards possible.

Knowing Kalpanas conceptualization, development and execution expertise, we wouldn’t be surprised if her album goes on floors sooner than expected. But for now, it is in the editing floor for some serious editing.

T.C. Government Girls High School,Guwahati.I was very naughty in my school days.Music classes were also held there, so we used to enjoy the school days very much.I was very good in studies too.School days are a mix of fun and knowledge.
I remember my manju madam, who taught us Mathematics in 8th class.She was my favourite and was one of the best and interesting teachers.And she was not only my favourite but also everyone”s favorite.I remember, once we did so much of naughtiness that our Hindi teacher got irrated and started crying but Manju ma”am knew how to handle us.We ourselves in her class never tried to do anything.We hamesha apna dost bana kar humko padati thi.Incidents were many,but I just want to say that teachers always trusted me.Amongst other optional subjects,I had taken Music as my additional subject.Whenever there was a chorus I used to participate in it.Teachers loved me for that.Teachers are the second face of parents.”Jaise Krishna Ko Janam diya Devki ne lekin bada kiya Yashoda maiya ne,usi tarahhame janam to diya hamari Maa ne lekin padaya-badaya hamare teachers ne.Hum aaj jo kuch bhi hain unhi ki wajah se hain".

Mumbai Academy of Moving Images' (MAMI) 10th International Film Festival, Mumbai.

My film Antardwand got great acclaim in Mumbai Academy of Moving Images' (MAMI) 10th International Film Festival, Mumbai held on the 31st of March 2009. I have sung the main title theme song in this film.Tina Ambani, representing Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group that sponsored the Festival, MAMI Trustee Kiran Shantaram, Manmohan Shetty, festival artistic director Sudhir Nandgaonkar, Yash Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor along with mother Neetu Kapoor, Indian Documentary Producers' Association president Jahnu Barua, Amit Khanna of Reliance Entertainment, filmmaker Vinod Pande and several other celebrities were present on the occasion. The event was conducted by television star Gaurav Kapoor, and singer Kalpana/ Mansi Scott also performed at the function with English and Hindi songs.

Kalpana released the video of her latest patriotic album - Bir Kunwar Ke Dharti to mark the 150th anniversary of Bir Kunwar Singh.

The revolt of 1857 – do we remember?
India is commemorating a seminal revolt against the British by native soldiers 150 years ago that jolted colonial rule, but there is hardly any enthusiasm for the anniversary and the heroes of that struggle mostly forgotten.
This album is dedicated to BIHAR and the 19th centenary leader and freedom fighter Bir Kunwar Singh. This album is also dedicated to those brave jawans who fought insurmountable odds to defend what they perceived to be the just cause.
Bir Kunwar Singh was a prominent Indian revolutionary who played a crucial role in transforming the Sepoy Mutiny into the all India revolt of 1857. Kunwar Singh, Babu Kunwar Singh belonged to a Rajput royal house of Jagdhishpur, currently a part of Sasaram district, Bihar state, India. At the age of 80 years, during India’s First War of Independence (1857-58), he actively led a select band of armed soldiers against the troops under the command of the British Raj, and also recorded victories in many battles. In his last battle, fought on 23 April, 1858, near Jagdishpur, the troops under the control of the British raj were completely routed. To honor his memory and his contribution to India’s freedom movement, the Republic of India issued a commemorative stamp on 23rd April, 1966.Shahabad, with headquarters at Arrah was one of the districts of Bihar, India. The district was subsequently bifurcated into a number of districts. Kunwar Singh belonged to this district.

Kalpana – the well known Bhojpuri singer is also known for her social activities. It is known fact that girls/women are very much dominated in the North India region. Earlier female singers/artistes were looked down upon. But Kalpana entered this scenario as storm setting a trend. Today every well to do family wants their daughter to take music as a career and singing profession and Bhojpuri music is now very much respected. Kalpana is now planning to devote a part of her life to cancer patients. She is associated with “Cancer Patients Welfare Cell” looked after by The Assam Association, Mumbai. Due to lack of specialized medical treatment of cancer in North Eastern states, the numbers of cancer patients arriving in Mumbai for better treatment has increased manifold. To tackle the situation the association has been extending help especially to the patients by way of arranging accommodation at reasonable price, medical check-up for the patients residing in Assam Bhawan, blood for the needy patients, consultation with renowned cancer specialties, monetary help to the economically weaker for purchase of medicines, train tickets and meeting other expenses. On 28th October, 2006, Kalpana is going to perform in A Charity Cultural Evening for the Benefit of Cancer Patients at Fine Arts Society Hall Chembur,Mumbai.


THE OTHER SIDE KALPANA

She is the first person who spoke for the need of Bhojpuri script to recognize the language.
She is promoting Bhojpuri music internationally. She has created history by becoming the first Bhojpuri singer to perform a Bhojpuri show in Mascut, The Gulf of Oman.
She is also involved in the activities of Nova--Netar Heart Old Boys Association, Maa Kali Mandir Trust – Bakhorapur, Ara ,Bihar. Bakhorapur in Ara is a very backward area. She is involved since two years and collect funds through charity shows for the trust. Every year the trust donates 25 sewing machines to widows, 25 tricycles to handicapped persons and essential commodities like food grains, clothing and medical treatment to poor people affected by natural calamities. The trust also arranges marriages for 11 poor girls irrespective of cause and provides for free education in kali mandir. Kalpana is now planning to devote a part to cancer patients. My new album Kajri is all about celebration of rain. The video has been shot in the beautiful scenario of Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya. Cherrapunjee is a town in East Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. It is credited as being one of the world's wettest places.The enchanting beauty of the place cannot be expressed in words.The feeling during the shoot was like I am in a separate world far away from sorrow, anxiety.

In 2001, with endless aspirations and immense confidence, Kalpana moved towards Mumbai the dream city of India. A disciple of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, Kalpana was fortunate to con music from him in order to shape her career. With her debut on Bhojpuri album “ Gawanwa Leja Rajaji ” she raised a storm which heralded the dawn of new era in the realm of Bhojpuri folk music. Released in 2003, Gawanwa Leja Rajaji strongly resonated with audiences, becoming that year's best-selling album in India and selling more than 1 crore units nationwide to date. During her cultural tours sponsored by I C C R (Govt. of India ) of Scotland, Mauritius, Suriname, Trinard & Tobogo, Mascut, Oman, Dubai, Australia, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Egypt , with her subtle artistry and mellifluous voice, the Bhojpuri Queen charmed the millions of rural folk and city-bred elites alike.

Her numbers in the Hindi block buster’s  Anil  Kapoor’s -  NO  PROBLEM,  Ajay Devgan’s- AAKROSH, Akshay Kumar’s - KHATTA MEETHA, WELCOME, DE DANA DAN, Shah Rukh Khan’s - BILLU BARBER, ANTARDWAND &  Monty Sharma’s - CHAMKU & MIRCHH have further endeared her countless people in India and abroad.

Awards and honors have come to Kalpana in plenty. She has been recognized with Bhikhari Thakur Samman in Calcutta, Swar Samragee , Bhojpuri Swar Mallika, Bhojpuri Sewa Samman, Bhojpuri Sangam Samman, Panchamrit Samman, Atkrista Gayak Samman, The Bhojpuri Queen to name a few. She was entitled with “Bhojpuri Samragee” and “Swar Kokila” for popularity contribution to folk music of Bihar by Uttar Pradesh and Bihar government.

Kalpana has enthralled music lovers with her flawless singing and even the most multiple generations of the Bhojpuri population have grown up listening to her. There are hundreds of thousands of her fans all around the world. She is the real ambassador of Bihar, a symbol of Bhojpuri music, a soft spoken, humble, cultured and virtuous person and will be remembered forever.

Childhood

Born in 1stth January 1978 at Barpata Road, Assam. I have been singing since my early child hood and have drawn immense inspiration from my father Shri Bipin Patowary, who incidentally is a folk singer.

A graduate in English literature from Cotton College, Assam and Visharad in Indian Classical Music (vocal) under Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth, Lucknow in 1996, and my goal is set on furthering a career in music.

My first stage performance was when I was just about 4 years old.

I did my parents proud by winning the 1st position in the “Bhupendra Sangeet” competition in 1985 amongst numerous artists from the North East.

In “Rabha Sangeet” competition, I again won the 1st prize.
“Jyoti Sangeet” being my forte, I won “the Best Singer Award” in the “Barpeta District” competition in 1986.

I am also a regular artist for both Doordarshan Kendra as well as All India Radio (yuba bani) Guwahati, since 1992.

I was adjusted the “Best Singer” of “Cotton College”, Guwahati 1993-1994 sessions.

Participated in All India Civil Services Competition “Kala Sangram” held in Bhopal.

I have rendered my voice as playback singer in more than 200 Assamese modern songs. My sold Assamese albums includes: - Kohuwa, Air Hostess, Jonak, Mon, Voilina, Jeuti, Puhar to name a few. Assamese feature films in which I have playbacked are Bhumiputra, Asene Kunuba Hiyaat, Priya O Priya, Kanyadaan, Anya Ek Jatra, Hit list, Morom Jetia Hore,Rupa Ganguly starrer–Ranangini etc....
