The
movement was started out as an ambitious attempt to promote the ideals of the
15th century saint from Assam and to propagate the culture of the State across
India.
Shyamkanu Mahanta, organizer of the Srimanta
Sankardeva Movement programme, said, “Mahapurush Sankardeva, the greatest
Assamese of all time, was a versatile personality – a saint, poet, dramatist,
actor, sculptor, painter and most importantly, a social reformer – who united
the heterogeneous society of Assam. However, we felt that this multifaceted
genius hasn’t got his recognition outside Assam, hence the need for a movement
such as this. We have been really overwhelmed by the kind of response we have
received in Mumbai.”
The day-long event featured a discussion on 'Relevance of
Srimanta Sankardeva in Modern India' which was addressed by reputed Vaishnavite
scholar Dr Sunil Kothari, Governor JB Patnaik, senior police officer
Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, actor Adil Hussain, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and actor Victor
Banerjee and followed by an interaction with Mumbai-based media.
