The Legacy of Bhikhari Thakur audio release in Press Club of Deogarh, Jharkhand.


Baidyanath temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas ^ most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva located in Deoghar in Jharkhand. 10 yrs back, my Bhojpuri musical journey started here. Last 15th July 2012 during my visit I bowed and offered my gratitude@thanked all for supporting the overwhelming worldwide response of my album.


I also thank all my friends & well wishers for supporting my cause.

The press club of Deogarh,Jharkhand officially released the world acclaimed Bhojpuri masterpiece.

As if I am corrupting the industry...Kalpana Patowary.

Bhojpurias are very egoistic and everyone thinks he is beyond criticism. At the same time the same person enjoys criticizing others. In a popular Bhojpuri reality show Sur-Sangram shown over Mahuaa TV channel had an exchange between two stalwarts of Bhojpuri Music. This lead to a chain of events ultimately casting a dark shadow on the channel and the society as well.

Bharat Sharma, a popular Bhojpuri singer of yore, was called as a special judge on the sets of Sur-Sangram, and was sitting between two permanent judges of the show – Malini Awasthi and Kalpana Patowary. Eight fresh contestants were introduced in that episode to challenge the finalists, one each from U.P. and Bihar. To be honest, this was an immoral act on the part of the channel to take benefit of the increasing popularity of the show by extending the number of episodes. And, naturally the permanent judges wanted to know from the contestants what special they have to challenge the finalists. There was nothing wrong in it but Bharat Sharma opposed them and interrupted Kalpana not to do so. In reply Kalpana asked back, is the contestant your relative? Every was stunned by her frank and fearless reply not falling in undue awe of a senior like Bharat Sharma, who is called Bhojpuri Samrat by his fans.

Matter should have been dropped by both the parties as the show ended but no. One of the party got so humiliated that his cronies took matter in their hands and started criticizing Kalpana branding her as a small time singer who does not know Bhojpuri culture and does not honor Bhojpuria stalwarts. Many things are being said against her. Many organizations are taking the benefit of this incident to come in the news. Even the parties involved seem to enjoy the cacophony saying it just a show business and any news is good news as long as it keeps them in the news. Bharat Sharma should have behaved like a senior but no, he appears in no mood to forgive Kalpana for her temerity to speak against him.

In the mean time another sequence was underway. The show was initially planned for 35 episodes and so were the judges, the anchor, and the sponsor was contracted. Kalpana had other pre-arranged engagements, so she declined to extend her contract. So did the sponsor who refused to dole out more money and claimed to be the sponsor till final contest of the Sur - Sangram without paying any extra money as the serial has been extended without reason. The channel got another sponsor and wanted to run the show as usual. Manoj Tiwari was against it so he too declined to anchor the show. After a marathon meeting he was made to accept his new role as a judge in the show in place of Kalpana and now Ravi Kishan will anchor the show in place of Manoj Tiwari. Kalpana' no show in extended episodes is now cited by the cronies of Bharat Sharma as their win as they were demanding ousting of Kalpana.

This whole episode reconfirms that Bhojpurias don’t take criticism in good spirit. A new group of Bhojpuri extremists is trying to take over the Bhojpuri as their person freedom and wants to silence every other voice which dares to oppose them. This new trend has to be nipped in the bud for the betterment of Bhojpuri culture and language otherwise these fundamentalists will take over and that will cause doom of everything related with Bhojpuri.

Vulgarity an old culture - who’s responsible.

In Trinidad and Tobago (and throughout the West Indies), we sing Bhojpuri songs, but we call them by different names. Here, we call it "chutney", in Jamaica, they call it "yard songs".It is very popular, and people on this list based in Toronto, New York, or Miami (and to a much lesser extent London) may know that the Indian-West Indians (from Trinidad and Guyana, in particular) have created a very popular touring circuit with Chutney performers (Anand Yankaran, Adesh Samaroo, Dil-e-Nadaan Orchestra, Terry Gajraj, Sundar Popo, Sonny Mann) travelling all over the islands and regularly to these cities in the US and Canada, singing Bhojpuri songs, essentially. Some traditional ones and many that they have composed themselves. Many CDs are made here in Trinidad, and we have six radio stations solely dedicated to Indian programming, and chutney music is very big. In Mauritius, also where Bhojpurias went to as girmitias, they sing Bhojpuri songs. My wife is from there, and I took across some Trinidad Chutney music CDs. Mauritians there liked it very much, because it was basically the same music, except we have modernised it somewhat with amplified and electrified instruments and studio production.

What I am interested in is what you refer to as the supposed "vulgarity" of Bhojpuri music. Academics here have said that the chutney music we sing comes from the songs performed for the Matikoor part of the wedding ceremony, and this accounts for the "vulgar" nature of the songs.

But these were supposed to be performed by women, for women only to hear.I am not sure if that is the case. Chutney music has become vulgar here because of the vulgarity of the African-derived music were have here as well. I would like to know how "vulgar" Bhojpuri music is in the Bhojpur region, but I have never had the chance to hear it. (Furthermore, I do not understand Bhojpuri well.)  I certainly would be interested if any of you have heard chutney music from Trinidad and Guyana, and I would like to know your honest opinion about its similarities and differences with Bhojpuri music from UP / Bihar. As I said, it has taken off here in a really big way, and developed a whole style and industry, without knowing much about its origins at all.
